The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) is heading up an initiative for the domestic production of chips. The program aims to strengthen Switzerland’s self-sufficiency in the face of competition from the European and US markets.
Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) are behind the new SwissChips initiative in the area of semiconductor technology. This initiative was set up in response to promotional programs at EU level and in the USA, further details of which can be found in a press release. Above all, the aim of the new initiative is to promote research and innovation in the fields of semiconductors, microelectronics and IC design.
The initiative was launched by ETH Zurich, the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microelectronics (CSEM) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). It is initially set to run from 2024 to 2026, with the costs borne by SERI (26 million Swiss francs) as well as CSEM, EPFL and ETH Zurich (7.8 million Swiss francs). Christoph Studer, who leads the Integrated Information Processing research group at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich, has been named as the designated head of SwissChips.
The infrastructure and technologies of the SwissChips initiative are available to all Swiss universities, universities of applied science and research institutions.
