A Kiss on Times Square

June 27, 2010 GW Administrator CULTURE 0

August 14th 1945 a sailor kissed a nurse in the middle of times square and German-American photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured this iconic moment.

SAN FRANCISCO - APRIL 20: Ninety one-year-old Edith Shain poses with a photo of her famous kiss with a sailor on V-J Day at the end of World War II April 20, 2010 in San Francisco, California. Shain, who claims to be the nurse in the famous kiss picture that was photographed by Alfred Eisenstaedt was meeting with veterans at the VA Hospital as part of her 'Keep the Spirit Alive' campaign that raises awareness about the 65th anniversary of World War II. 29148 SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA - Wednesday March 11 2009. Controversy swirls around one of the famous moments in the history of photography: a sailor kissing a nurse on V-J Day in Times Square on August 14, 1945 . The late Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of the 20th century's great photojournalists took the picture. Now, it's a 25-foot, 6,000-pound sculpture by J. Seward Johnson called Unconditional Surrender and it's on display courtesy of the Port of San Diego, in the G Street Mole Park downtown. It appears as if the artist never asked permission to mimic the couple from the picture in three dimensions. A Life spokesperson said: Since Time Inc. holds the copyright to that photo and the artist did not obtain our permission to create the sculpture, unfortunately the sculpture is an infringement of our copyright .
