NY: Nov 15, 2022: Hunter from Elsewhere: A Journey with Helen Britton on Film

Join the German Consulate General, in their first cooperation with the NYC Jewelry Week with the screening of “Hunter from Elsewhere” about Helen Brittons experiences in Germany, while journeying Idar-Oberstein, Thuringia and Munich.

The US premiere of “Hunter from Elsewhere: A Journey with Helen Britton on Film part of REEL JEWELS, a film program, during NYC Jewelry Week.

About the film:

Stone drops falling from a metal cloud, a shiny blue bird in a thorny thicket of dark silver, ghost trains loaded with mysterious treasure. A poetic journey accompanying Australian artist Helen Britton on her hunt for neglected materials, abandoned techniques and the last witnesses of a vanishing era.

Helen Britton amalgamates them into wearable sculptures: ”while the components themselves are in the form of the cheapest trinket, the sentiment they convey reaches into the deepest abyss.“

Her art is modern, avant-garde jewelry, sculptures and drawings, admired and collected around the world. The film follows her stalking through the German outback, seeking out abandoned workshops, forgotten artisans and manufacturing processes vanishing in time. Visiting the heavy industry sites of her Australian childhood in Newcastle NSW, stone carvers in German Idar-Oberstein and glassblowers in Thuringia, we reach her Munich studio, where the artist amalgamates her capture, memories, and precious materials into timeless miniature sculptures.

A discussion between the director Elena Alvarez Lutz and Barbara Paris Gifford, Associate Curator, Museum of Arts and Design will take place following the premiere of the documentary.
