Physicists at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) took a giant leap toward nuclear fusion at their lab in Greifswald this week. After years of research, the team successfully created the first hydrogen plasma using the revolutionary machine: Wendelstein 7-X. Dozens gathered at the facility to witness the event and thousands more tuned in on the livestream. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who holds a doctorate degree in physics, joined the research team in Greifswald and was even invited to press the button to start up Wendelstein 7-X.
