LA: Violin Concert in REDCAT

REDCAT in LA presents: VLN & VLA, featuring Malcolm Goldstein

event_ViolinkonzertLOS ANGELES, CA—REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for contemporary arts, presents VLN & VLA, featuring violin virtuoso Malcolm Goldstein. This epic concert of music for solo, ensemble and concerto violin and viola, gathers internationally acclaimed string musicians to perform an exhilarating array of new, recent and older works. Curating and conducting the program is Mark Menzies, violin and viola faculty at CalArts. VLN & VLA will be held at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 7:00 pm.

Guest of honor Malcolm Goldstein, whose Soundings improvisations have received accolades worldwide for extending the range of the violin’s tonal qualities and sound textures, reveals new dimensions of expressivity in a solo performance. On the program are his groundbreaking Soundings, a series of compositions that involve his unique combination of improvisation and composition; and Gentle rain before mushrooms (in memoriam John Cage).

Other special guest performers and composers include distinguished alumni Andrew McIntosh, who recently won a prize at the prestigious Gaudeaumus International competition, and Andrew Tholl, who will perform his violin concerto Asphyxiation. Providing an eloquent commentary on the perils of war from the 17th century is Heinrich Biber’s Battaglia that ends in tears, having explored what is considered the first composition in Western music to involve polytonality. The program culminates with CalArts’ renowned violin faculty Lorenz Gamma performing Lutoslawski’s Partita for violin and chamber orchestra with the obbligato piano solo performed by piano faculty Ming Tsu.
