Josephine Baker 26/01/2024 to 28/04/2024 | Neue Nationalgalerie

The exhibition “Josephine Baker. Icon in Motio “n at the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin explores Baker’s staging strategies and facets in an audiovisual essay and shows the special nature of her dance style and her radiance on the screen – sensual, dramatic and humorous.

Josephine Baker (1906-1975) is an icon and a media phenomenon:
In films, sound recordings and photographic material, her presence as a dancer, singer and actress continues to have an impact to this day. Baker’s artistic expressiveness and life achievements have become part of a collective memory and at the same time a cliché.
The exhibition makes Josephine Baker’s artistic impact and her strategies for success tangible and shows how she has inspired other artists from her first performances in Paris in the 1920s to the present day.
For the first time, this exhibition takes an in-depth look at Baker’s contribution to cinema, which has received little attention to date.
  • A special exhibition of the Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn
