Chancellor Merkel’s Strong Appeal for More Tolerance
Following violent riots from right wing protestors in the town of Heidenau over the last weekend in August, Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke out strongly against messages of hatred. The town of Heidenau is home to an asylum facility that hosts around 575 refugees from northern Africa and the Middle East. The violence in the town has been condemned by members of the entire government, including Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel and Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere. “This aggressive, xenophobic atmosphere is absolutely inacceptable,” said Chancellor Merkel on Monday. “Germany is a country that respects the dignity of every single individual. That is laid out in our constitution and applies to every person in our country.”
