Southern California Goes To German Summer School of New Mexico

This summer, for the 39th time, the University of New Mexico presented in consortium with California State University Long Beach its German Summer School of New Mexico,

The total immersion program in German Studies is designed to help intermediate and advanced speakers to achieve near-native fluency. It is open to undergraduate, graduate, and even high school students or teachers.

18SummerSchool1Located in the Taos Ski Valley, close to Taos and Santa Fe, the program’s site has the charm of a secluded Alpine Village, making it conductive for students to participate in a fully German-speaking environment. During their entire stay, students focused on expanding their knowledge of the German language and culture, speak only German both inside and outside the classroom.

Participants can attend either a four-week or two-week session. The program’s broad curriculum offers undergraduate and graduate courses, workshops on literature, culture, history, politics, or performing arts as well as a lecture series that emulates study at a German university. Students can earn credits toward their German Studies degrees as well as take the Goethe-Institut Language Proficiency certification exams. In addition, they have the opportunity to participate in an extensive program of extracurricular activities.

At this year’s summer school, activities included hiking, volleyball, a visit to the Santa Fe opera for a performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio, tango classes and participating in the traditional 4th of July parade. Another highlight included showing support and cheering for Germany in the Soccer World Cup Final.
