Open House at Deutsches Haus:
Deutsches Haus at NYU is delighted to invite to the annual HAUS-FEST to celebrate our 37th year as New York City’s leading German language school. At HAUS-FEST, you can meet our teachers; find out about our language program and special classes of our upcoming fall term; and take a quick placement exam to find out which class is the best fit for you. Sign up for a kids’ class and get our new Deutsches Haus T-shirt for kids!
One lucky newly-registered German-student will be the winner of our complementary Air Berlin ticket to Berlin*.
In addition, the Consulate General of Germany and the Consulate General of Switzerland will be present with an informational booth.
HAUS-FEST will also highlight the wines of Burgenland, one of the four major wine growing regions of Austria, which is known for its indigenous red wine varieties “Blaufränkisch” and “Zweigelt”. But it is also home to the white signature grape Grüner Veltliner, and many more. Join us for their wine tasting from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
In the evening Deutsches Haus presents a free concert in our courtyard by critically-acclaimed Thereminist Dorit Chrysler with German and Austrian food and drinks!

Deutsches Haus presents an open-air concert and performance in our courtyard to celebrate our 37th Haus-Fest with the critically-acclaimed thereminist Dorit Chrysler. Invented in 1919 by Russian electro physicist Lev Sergejewitsch Termen, the Theremin generates sound without being touched. Notoriously difficult to play, it is one of the first electronic instruments that inspired the creation of synthesizers of future generation.
Dorit Chrysler’s music has been described as the love child of Marianne Faithfull and Nikola Tesla, “with Jane Birkin as the nanny and Bjork as the wayward Girl Scout leader” (Paper magazine). Dorit was born in Graz and resides in New York. She is the founder of the New York Theremin Society & Kid Cool Theremin School and is one of a few Theremin virtuosos worldwide. Her solo work ranges from electronic pop to film soundscapes. Lars van Trier used her compositions, and she has collaborated with such diverse acts as Elliot Sharp, Cluster, Chicks on Speed, Baby Dee, Faust, Marilyn Manson, Tocotronic and Lee Hazelwood.
