The celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation will reach their peak in October. On 31 October 1517 the reformer Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, initiating changes that would affect all of Europe. Dresden and the Saxon Elbeland are honouring Martin Luther, his theses and this unusual event with numerous events and exhibitions. The city of Dresden invites you to follow Luther’s steps, see the original settings and discover a history that is still very much alive to this very day.
TIPS
On 31 October Dresden will be celebrating the anniversary of the day on which Luther nailed his theses to a church door in Wittenberg. Come and enjoy the colourful programme full of music and dance taking place right at the foot of the Dresdner Frauenkirche. Starting at 3 PM, the Protestant-Lutheran Church of Saxony is inviting everyone to come together under the motto “CELEBRATE – The Reformation turns 500”. With lots of music and dance, themed tents and a mass in the cathedral, there is something for everyone, no matter what your beliefs. And make sure to visit the Dresden Frauenkirche and learn more about the largest protestant church in Dresden.
It is not just the city of Dresden where you will find reminders of Luther and his life’s work. There is also a beautiful historical walking trail that goes through the Saxon Elbeland. That trail, the Luther Trail in Saxony, takes the visitor to many of the places where the events of the Reformation took place, such as the former Electoral Residence in Torgau. There, in Hartenfels Castle, you will find the exhibition “Torgau. Home of the Renaissance and Reformation” which shows majestic electoral treasures, ornamental weapons and exquisite examples of the artistry of Torgau’s goldsmiths.
