Maximilian Schell is dead. The Austrian actor became the first German-language actor to win an Oscar in the post-war era, in 1962, for his role in the “Judgment at Nuremberg.” which he won over Paul Newman in “The Hustler”. Later he was honored with nominations for “The Man in the Glass Booth” in 1975, and for best supporting actor in “Julia” in 1977.
The 83-year-old collapsed on the set of a TV-production last week and died today in the hospital in Innsbruck, Austria.
The actor was part of an artists family, his father was Swiss playwright Hermann Ferdinand Schell and his mother Austrian stage actress Noe von Nordberg. His sister Maria Schell also had a Hollywood career with leading roles in 1958’s The Brothers Karamazov, 1960’s Cimarron, 1978’s Superman and so on.
